1: Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas:

The Government of India have introduced a new scheme called Kasturiba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBV) in the year 2004 for setup of residential schools with boarding facilities at Elementary Level for girls belonging predominantly to SC, ST, OBC and other minorities in difficult areas. In our state this programme started form 14th August 2005 onwards and after 2007 merged with SSA programme as a separate component.

Initially this scheme is co-ordinated with the existing schemes of Department of Elementary Education viz., SSA, NPEGEL. The scheme is applicable only in identified Educationally backward Mandals, whereas per census data of 2001, the rural female literacy is below the National average and gender gap in literacy is more that the National average.


  • To remove gender gap to achieve the objectives of SSA.
  • To provide quality education to the girls in residential mode.
  • To enrol 11-14 age out of school girls & drop out girls in 6th, 7th and 8th classes.
  • To provide free education to SC, ST, BC and Minority girls.
  • To encourage the girls towards education.
  • Government of India launched a new scheme during 2004-05 called ‘Kasthurba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) with free boarding facilities at elementary level for girls belonging to predominantly to SC, ST, BC & Minorities in Educationally Backward Blocks in the state.

    NOTE : 7 KGBVs taken over from Khammam district as per AP-reorganisation Act 2014.

  • To ensure access and quality education to the girls of disadvantaged groups of society by setting up Residential schools with boarding facilities at Elementary level.
  • To provide quality education for dropped out girls in low female literacy mandals by mainstreaming from Residential Bridge course centres.
  • Presently 352 KGBVs are functioning under different Residential Educational Institutions Societies such as:
    • a) A.P. Residential Educational Institutions Society(APREIS) : 105
    • b) A.P. Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (APSWREIS): 34
    • c) A.P. Tribal Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (APTWREIS): 43
    • d) Project Officers of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan : 170
  • All 352 Kasthurba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas have been made operational. Further IX & X classes are also added with a view to continue the education of girls upto secondary level which is pre-requisite qualification for various vocational courses and also to pursue further studies. Society is registered under the A.P Societies Act 2001 on 14th October 2011 and now KGBV Society has been merged with AP RVM (SSA) Hyderabad on 9-5-2014.

Achievements in 1st Quarter:
  • Launched POLYCET coaching to the KGBV X class outgoing Students, 71.19% of students are qualified in POLYCET.
  • 91.05% of the students are passed in SSC Public Examinations in March 2015.
  • Conducted summer camps for out of school girls in KGBVs.
  • Performance Assessment test for S.Os, CRTs, PETs, ANMs, Accountants was conducted.
  • Orientation training programme to the Special Officers and Accountants was conducted on Administrative Matters and Accounts.
  • Subject Orientation Training to the CRTs, PETs & ANMs at District Level was conducted.
  • All KGBVs converted into English medium as per G.O.Ms.No.23, School Education (Prog.II) Department, dated:29-04-2015.
  • Proposal submitted to the Government for upgradation of KGBVs upto Intermediate.
  • Proposed to implement Students Academic Monitoring System (SAMS) in KGBVs.
  • Proposed to construct Smokeless chullas in KGBVs.
